In this exciting role, the Finance Manager will oversee business processes, administration, and financial management for our growing and vibrant community. From the tactical to the strategic, the Finance Manager is responsible for processing the congregation’s financial transactions in the areas of payments, dues collections, donations, and payroll; for partnering with other departments to create and manage budgets supporting operations and strategic priorities; and for professional expertise and reporting required by the Board of Directors and the members of congregation. Reporting to the Executive Director with guidance from the Treasurer. This position manages the systems and ensures the accurate recording and reporting of information on a timely basis. The Assistant Accountant is a part-time direct report.

Operational Responsibilities

• Maintain books and accounts, using QuickBooks.

• Produce monthly and annual closing and financial statements.

• Use the congregation’s ShulCloud database system for membership and accounts receivable processing, billing, collections, and all other cash receipts.

• Manage accounts payable.

• Maintain employee benefits programs, such as 403(b) and Section 125 processing.

• Process bi-weekly Payroll, using Paychex.

• Prepare and file 1099 and 1096 for independent contractors.

• Prepare workers’ compensation audits.

• Working with Treasurer, maintain appropriate cash forecasting schedules.

• Prepare annual tax letter.

 

Strategic Responsibilities

• Develop productive and supportive working relationships with staff department heads and lay leaders. Become a respected partner who helps congregation leaders effectively address financial issues in service of meeting their strategic objectives.

• Provide reporting to support strategic decision-making by congregation staff and leaders.

• In collaboration with the Administrative team, address the needs of multiple stakeholders

(congregation staff, Board officers, committee heads, members) by providing timely and accurate financial information.

• Partner with department heads, lay leaders, and Executive Director to develop annual budgets aligned with the congregation’s strategic priorities and operational needs.

• Review, monitor and manage monthly budget variances with department heads.

• Proactively identify and communicate opportunities for improvement in financial processes

and the financial management of the congregation. Partner with appropriate stakeholders to bring approved changes to fruition.

• Support the work of the congregation’s Finance Committee.

Qualifications

• Five-plus years’ experience in a finance or accounting department with increasing levels of responsibility, preferably in a small business or non-profit

• Adept with QuickBooks

• Broad exposure to different elements of an accounting department (A/P, general ledger, financial statement preparation, accounts receivable, payroll and benefits functions, etc.)

• Experience with budgeting in a small business or non-profit

• Detail-oriented, able to think proactively, to relate details to systemic patterns and strategic objectives, to prioritize work and to work independently

• Ability to juggle and prioritize numerous requests while simultaneously interfacing with multiple internal and external “customers”

• Strong verbal and written communication ability

• Ability to partner across a diverse range of skillsets and to support others in financial planning, management, and decision-making

• Excellent organizational skills

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

• A highly professional demeanor and the ability to handle confidential
