This is a newly created role due to a high volume of recent acquisitions.  Fabulous opportunity and a very Strategic role. The position will report to the Chief People Officer .


The primary responsibility of the VP, Head of HR is to partner with both business leaders and Line HR Business Partners to define executable strategies and plans that improve talent retention, acquisition and development for  HR operations.


This role will have numerous direct reports.  Including 2 Regional Full Service HRDs and 1 Divisional Director of HR for Focused Service Hotels and 4 Regional HRBPs.

  • Full service hotels – Regional HRD East (25 hotels) and Regional HR West (25 hotels)
  • Extended and Select Service HR teams – 4 HRBPs (20-30 ES/SS Hotels each). 
  • Total hotel oversite is approximately 3 direct reports, 40 indirect reports covering 50 Full Service hotels and upwards of 200 Focused Service Hotels.



The focus of this job is to work with Corporate and Hotel leaders to establish a talent agenda for hotel employees – that focuses on the acquisition, retention and development of the hotel team members.  The role is responsible for contributing to our overall people strategy, process and execution to ensure Sonesta HR is adding value and reducing risk as it relates to our people strategy.  The work involves driving toward results by enrolling the commitment and buy-in of others. While the job requires strong initiative and self-direction, results are only achieved with and through people, so the ability to successfully influence and persuade others by understanding how their individual needs and motivations link to goals is essential.


The HR Leadership aspect of the role involves the understanding and leveraging of the HR team in the corporate office (Centers of Excellence) and hotels.  Our people strategy requires a leader who is driven, innovative, collaborative, and forward thinking.  Strong knowledge and application of best in class programs to attract and retain talent is important in this role. 


The role has variety of tasks and is dynamic and changing. Since goals and desired results can quickly change, the job requires regularly meeting with and pro-actively establishing relationships with new groups and people. The ability to understand, quickly react, and motivate others to adapt to the changing organization is a critical key to success. In general, the core of this position requires a motivated and motivating team builder and organization developer.


Decisions will many times have to be made in ambiguous situations under pressure and will generally need the ideas and advice of others. Details will need to be handled quickly and accurately.  Strong written and verbal communication skills will be required as the majority of the business interactions will be remote leveraging phone and electronic communication channels.


Key success measurements for the role are improved employee engagement scores, stronger managerial capability, stronger retention rates for employees and less time and fewer vacancies in roles.



The job environment is fast paced, results-oriented, and collaborative environment. While there is urgency for goal achievement, responsibility for the achievement of results needs to be shared and effectively delegated when necessary. Initiating projects and processes beyond established practices will often require training and developing others and enlisting their support by using a “selling” rather “telling” communication style.


Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Develop and champion our Sonesta employment brand, driving the brand throughout our hotels and team members
  • Ensure our Mission and Values and culture are actively promoted and recognized throughout the portfolio of hotels
  • Advocate for the hotel needs with the COE to ensure our HR capability is adding value and reducing risk for the organization
  • Act as a business lead for the People strategies within Sonesta.  Contribute to and execute on the HR roadmap including prioritization and communication of progress within the hotel leadership.



  • Work to support field COE and HR business partners to fill Hotel Leadership and Sales roles with high quality candidates in an efficient timeframe
  • Ensure we have a strong HR capability for Sonesta Hotels though selection of hotel HR talent, training and development of the HR team and strong relationships with HRSS and COE who provide services to the hotels
  • Develop strong relationships with functional leaders (ie: Marketing, Finance, Engineering, IT, Legal, Sales/Revenue, etc) in order to meet the business needs though talent strategies
  • Utilize and collaborate with resources across different departments and corporate office



  • Drive HR cycles and programs through the hotels – on time, value add support and services
  • Develop Hotel Budget Guidance annually
  • Create, where absent, process to support a best in class HR process for Sonesta. 
  • Manage HR Hotel staff and the mentor HR staff within Hotels – including selection, performance management, recognition, training/development and succession strategies


Reporting and Metrics

  • Define metrics and a reporting process that measure and monitor the effectiveness and efficacy of Sonesta People practices and HR efforts
  • Work with leaders to drive results and develop stronger managerial and leadership capability through understanding data and analytics


Leading with Passion

  • Active involvement in Hospitality associations and networks for the benefit of Sonesta’s people strategy
  • Responsible for ensuring Hotel HR success through the eyes of employees, guests, and owners
  • Capable of influencing employees to perform to their highest standard and establishing a trusting environment to enrich the culture
  • Focus on the mission and well-being of the department, hotel, and company as a whole
  • Lead by example and operate with integrity and respect

Qualifications and Skills

A candidate for this position must possess the following applicable knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate and provide applicable examples to support his/her competency.

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10+ years’ experience in the hospitality sector
  • Knowledge of attracting, retaining and developing “best practices.”
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; concise style.
  • Strong mentoring and leadership skills
  • Ability to connect with C-suite leaders and Hotel Leadership to understand their business needs, gaps in talent and bring viable, meaningful solutions to the business
  • Expert and advocate for talent tools within Sonesta – for both selection; succession; and coaching purposes
  • Analytical ability – strong capability with excel
  • Ability to partner with all levels of hiring managers, providing a consultative approach to business problems.
  • Ability to act quickly and efficiently with high degree of professionalism.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • HRIS, Word, excel, PowerPoint skills required. 
  • Demonstrable expertise in data driven decisions, analysis and action taking
