Accounting Manager  

Overview

The ideal candidate must have a strong technical accounting background, be comfortable and confident navigating through new and complex accounting matters, have outstanding communication and writing skills, be attentive to details, and be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while working well on a team. The ideal candidate must also have familiarity with internal controls over financial reporting and Sarbanes Oxley (“SOX”). 

The Accounting Manager will lead the accounting team on technical accounting matters, accounting policy and memo writing. They will also assist internal audit with SOX coordination and implementation of internal control best practices. Further, the Accounting Manager will be one of the firm’s primary reviewers of property-level monthly and quarterly financial statements and supporting workpapers. The Accounting Manager will work collaboratively with the firm’s other Accounting Managers, VP – Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer. 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the accounting team as the main resource on technical accounting matters, including carrying out research and writing memos

  • Maintenance, communication and updating of critical accounting policies

  • Review monthly and quarterly property level financial statements and supporting reconciliations and workpapers which may include operating properties, development properties and the Company’s taxable REIT subsidiary

  • Review schedules that support the property-level financial information and disclosures in the Company’s SEC filings including those on Form 10-K and Form 10-Q

  • Interact directly with other members of the Accounting Team, external auditors and internal auditors 

  • Assist with Sarbanes Oxley compliance and act as a liaison to internal audit

  • Other duties as assigned 

     

    Qualifications

     

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Master’s degree and / or CPA preferred

  • Minimum of 6 years’ professional experience in accounting, preferably with a large public accounting firm with a focus on REITs or real estate clients

  • Strong technical accounting background

  • Strong command of real estate accounting concepts including purchase price allocations, straight line rent and leasing concepts under ASC 842

  • Familiarity with GAAP research tools and the FASB codification

  • Effective problem-solving skills and sound judgement 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to function in a team-oriented setting and respond well to constructive criticism

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks with a high attention to detail

  • Tenacity toward meeting deadlines, with a strong sense of urgency and good self-management discipline

  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently

  • Strong ethical character and a sense of humor

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, experience with General Ledger software a plus (preferably Yardi)
