Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will provide leadership and direction for the entire Finance Department. The Controller is responsible for carrying out the department’s goals, which include: (a) maintaining complete, accurate, timely and reliable financial records; (b) implementing and maintaining clear and properly used financial processes and controls; (c) managing financial technology solutions; and (d) partnering with the organization’s program and department directors to solve business issues. The Controller ensures that the organization’s accounting, financial reporting, planning, analysis, and compliance requirements are met. The Controller also ensures that the annual budget and audit are completed successfully. The position will directly and indirectly oversee and support the work and professional development of a group of eight financial professional staff.


The Controller will be a financial professional with significant experience managing professional and non-professional finance staff, preferably in a non-profit environment. The Controller will be high-energy leader with exemplary organizational and budget management skills. Critically, the Controller will be an excellent communicator, with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with all levels of program and administrative staff at all levels of familiarity with finance principles.


While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or comparable business degree; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Experience managing processes, including annual budgets and annual independent audits
  • General ledger experience, including report writing, preferably with Abila MIP
  • Demonstrated experience successfully and continuously developing ideas into strategic goals to position a finance department for long-term success
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the senior/leadership levels of staff within and outside a finance department, with a collaborative coaching and problem-solving mindset in providing support to non-finance managers as they execute and plan their budgets
  • Experience advancing and supporting the skills and work of a diverse finance team (some experience in managing a remote workforce preferred)
